Is It Russia Now?
Clinton Watts, in a PBS interview regarding Russian interference in our electoral process, stated, “The one thing we should know is that Russia did not get in the game to win one election or to put one candidate forward…. the idea was to undermine democracy to make Americans lose confidence in democratic institutions and elected officials by turning every crack in our country into a chasm and pitting different race, ethnic groups, religious groups, socioeconomic groups, second amendment, abortion rights whatever it might be, to where we fight against each other instead of being a unified front…”
Mr. Watts, Robert A. Fox Fellow in the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s Program on the Middle East and Senior Fellow at the Center For Cyber and Homeland Security at The George Washington University, authored “Messing with the Enemy, Surviving a Social Media World of Hackers, Terrorists, Russians and Fake News”.
Given Russian activities may have been mainly in the past, what the hell is happening now? Watt’s list of antagonisms could now include conflict with allies, friends, neighbors, trading partners, suppliers, US business entities, and more. The list is getting longer.
Are the pillars of our democratic society under fire? The Intelligence Community charged with keeping us secure is discounted, left out of the equation and sometimes scoffed at. Justice and the rule of law are now political and the court system is being stacked by ideology. Science is being ignored, defunded and agreements cancelled. Environment profligated. Scholarship and education downgraded and privatized. Journalism and truth are under attack constantly except for networks dedicated to campaign support. Misinformation is continual. Conflicts of interest are accepted and allowed to flourish. Profit is placed ahead of the common good or common sense. Stable trade agreements are ripped up, relationships angered and trade wars commenced. Tax laws are slanted unfairly. Financial conservatism ignored. Voting Rights stolen and frustrated. Atrocities are fostered against children. Yeh, there is more.
Is our democracy becoming a disaster? Is the fabric of our society disintegrating?
Who is benefiting from this chaos? I submit; it is not we the American people.
So why is this? Is it Russia or is our leadership accidentally or by design “turning every crack in our country into a chasm”? Are those charged with oversight doing anything about it or are they contributing and thus complicit?
Hey “Leadership”! Your citizens demand better.
